IVC Filter Placement and Removal

Blood clots that form within the legs can break up and travel through the vena cava to the heart and lungs, causing severe complications or even death. An IVC filter is a device designed to “trap” and break up clots while still in the inferior vena cava (IVC).

During the procedure, an interventional radiologist uses image guidance to place the filter within the IVC. Today, these filters may be left in place permanently, or removed once the risk of clot formation has been reduced.
