Superficial Venous Reflux Ablation

Also known as venous “insufficiency,” reflux occurs when the blood pools up in a vein close to the skin and does not drain properly. This typically occurs in the legs, resulting in what are known as “varicose veins.” In some cases, venous insufficiency can be dangerous if left untreated.

Venous insufficiency can be treated with either radiofrequency or laser techniques, and on an outpatient basis. During either procedure, a thin catheter is inserted into the vein using imaging guidance. Laser or RF energy is then applied to the inside of the vein, which seals the vein closed. Once the vein is closed, other healthy veins take over its function, and the sealed vein eventually dissolves and disappears.
