Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is an artificial channel within the liver created by an interventional radiologist to treat portal hypertension that can lead to intestinal bleeding or fluid buildup within the abdomen. During the procedure, a guide wire and sheath are inserted through the jugular vein and image-guided with fluoroscopy to accurately place the shunt.
